Jumilhac le Grand is a rural commune in the north of Dordogne extending over a huge area of more than 6700 ha (15,000 acres). It is located in the foothills of the Massif Central and crossed by the gorges of the river Isle. The population is just 1300.
Jumilhac le Grand was originally famous for its gold mines (active from roman times until the end of the 20th century) and subsequently for its numerous forges powered by the river throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today the principal activities of the commune are agriculture and tourism.
As well as the superb chateau Jumilhac, visitors discover a rich architectural heritage, a magnificent landscape with deep valleys crossed by plentiful hiking trails and bridle ways, superb fishing, birdwatching and a wide choice of accomodation.
